Sumario: | Background: Psychogenic Polydipsia or Self Induced Water Intoxication(SIWI) is characterized by excessive thirst and compulsive water drinking. Studies have reported that it occurs in about 6-20% among patients with mental illness, and is often overlooked and untreated. Both the newer atypical antipsychotics and the older drugs have been associated with the development of hyponatremia. It develops in three phases – beginning with polydipsia and polyuria, followed by hyponatremia and eventually water intoxication, which can result in life threatening complications like seizures, coma and even death. Awareness about this potential side effect and taking appropriate timely steps can help in prevention of antipsychotic -associated hyponatremia. We report a case of antipsychotic-induced polydipsia and hyponatremia who was successfully managed.
