A Case of Mephentermine Induced Psychotic disorder in a Female Patient

INTRODUCTION: Mephentermine is a sympathomimetic similar to methamphetamines. It act by stimulating adrenergic receptors by increasing norepinephrine levels. We report here a case of mephentermine abuse in a female patient CASE REPORT: 26 year old female, single, inter hailing from Charminar, Hyderabad brought by her father with complaints of hearing voices telling her to harm herself, suspiciousness that people will try to harm her since 3 months. • Abuse of IV drug TERMIN (mephentermine) since 2 yrs Introduced by friends and used to abuse along with boyfriend. Allegedly used to mix his blood with termin and use. It used to give feeling of emotional closeness with her boyfriend. initially 2ml increased since 3 months upto 6 ml 2-3 times a week. Patient used to feel filled with energy and increased sexual desire after its use. There is craving,withdrawal symptoms and tolerance to the effect noted. • Premorbid anger dysregulation, sensitive to criticism and self harming behaviour suggestive of Cluster B personality traits; • MSE: Delusion of Persecution, Delusion of Reference; • Auditory Hallucination; • Diagnosis: Other Stimulants Induced Psychotic disorder; • ICD 10 code F15.53. DISCUSSION: There are only few such case reports and all among male. This is the first case report in a female patient. However, information from media indicate that the problem of its abuse is on rise. CONCLUSION: Awareness of mephentermine’s potential for abuse and efforts to regulate its use and formulate management strategies is need of the hour as we may see more such cases in near future.
