description INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disorder that affects the central nervous system by causing demyelination of nerve fibers. Both Demyelination, nerve damage and stress of relapsing symptoms can cause Depression and related disorders. Even the medications used for MS can lead to neuropsychiatric manifestations. CASE STUDY: A 24 year old female came to OPD with complaints of low mood, anhedonia, easy fatiguability, death wishes and crying spells since 1 month. History revealed diagnosis of Multiple sclerosis when she experienced similar mood symptoms and frequent panic attacks for which she was treated with SSRIs for 6 months. Patient has been in remission until 2 months ago when she developed left lower limb weakness and relapse, following which depressive symptoms were reported and was started on SSRIs with significant improvement. CONCLUSION: Multiple sclerosis in itself based on location of the lesions can trigger Depression and at the same time the long-standing nature of the disease and relapses can trigger Depression as they act as stressors. So, there is a need for us to evaluate and monitor the signs and symptoms of Depression and anxiety along with MS relapses as studies have association.
