description BACKGROUND: Rapid-cycling BPAD has been shown to be present in about 12–24% of people with BPAD in Western countries and Rapid Cyclers were found to have many associations when compared with non Rapid cyclers. No recent studies in India have looked into various associations among rapid cyclers. AIM: To study the prevalence of Rapid cycling and its association with various factors. METHODOLOGY : It’s a cross-sectional study done in the period from August2020 to August 2021,recruited through convenience sampling in a tertiary care which included all OP and IP diagnosed with BPAD and clinical information is collected from patients and their informants through a semi-structured interview. RESULTS: Among the sample of 100,prevalence of rapid cycling BPAD at the time of recruitment is 10%.Mean age of onset in rapid cyclers 27 years, mean duration of illness among rapid cyclers is 11 years ,Mean number of hospitalisations of rapid cyclers is 3 times. There were significant differences in the 1(st) episode of bipolar (p=0.000) and in the type of BPAD(p=0.012).There were no significance in socio-demographic variables, gender( M-11.1%, F-8.7%) (p=0.75), Socio-economic status (p=0.36), marital status (p=0. 339) ,Educational (p= 0.156 ), occupational status (p=0.739) .There were no significant difference in terms of presence of family history (p=0.452),thyroid disorders (13.8% were rapid cyclers)(p=0.5),use of substance and antidepressants. CONCLUSIONS: Prevalence of rapid cyclers found in my study sample is 10% and rapid cyclers had higher proportion of mania as 1(st) episode and TYPE II BPAD.
