description BACKGROUND: Women are two to three times more likely to face decreased sexual urges as compared to men. Several factors contribute to this condition which include vaginal dryness and thinning of vaginal tissues leading to a general discomfort during sexual intercourse. Limited studies are available on sexual dysfunction in perimenopausal women in india. AIM: To evaluate and assess sexual dysfunction in perimenopausal women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 30. women falling in the age group of 45 to 55 years were included in the study by purposive sampling in a tertiary care hospital, research centre and the neighbouring localities after obtaining informed consent. They were assessed with a self made Socio-demographic proforma, Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale (ASEX) and Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). RESULTS: 60% of the women had significant sexual dysfunction which was predicted using the scales with the data collected till date. Onset of psychiatric illnesses like depression further led to an early incidence of sexual dysfunction. CONCLUSION: Prevalent life stressors like loss of a loved one, neglecting relationships, poor health, loss of a job, poor financial conditions etc was seen to affect the desire among women for sexual intercourse. This study highlights the increased prevalence of sexual dysfunction in perimenopausal females.
