Sumario: | The understanding of epigenetics in Psychiatry has provided a change in paradigm in the etiology and management of substance use disorders (SUD). The discovery of epigenetic changes in SUD that is being translated into drugs to reverse these changes, will be discussed. Although SUDs are associated with high adolescent mortality and morbidity, less than 10% receive treatment. Management challenges including motivation and engagement, family involvement, focusing on social ecology and provision of follow up. A well structured de-addiction programme was unveiled at Deaddiction Centre at Barrackpore. Early results of such programme have been gratifying, and will be discussed, to look into future challenges and opportunities.
