“Antipsychotics Basket of the last decade for a psychiatrist: Within and Beyond!”

The increase in availability of a number of antipsychotic molecules in the last decade has implanted seeds of optimism among psychiatrists towards a vision of developing a promising treatment for schizophrenia. However, response of most antipsychotics, discovered so far, is limited to improvement in only the positive symptoms of psychosis with minimal effect on negative and cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia, which is primarily contributing to the residual socio-occupational dysfunction. To add to this is the array of significant neurologic and metabolic adverse effects. Thus the need for continued search for better molecules targeting unexplored pathways and novel neuro transmitters is highlighted.
