Sumario: | Sexually transmitted infections (STI) in Germany are constantly rising. STI screening and testing decreased during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic due to redistribution of public health resources. During the pandemic, there was a decline in the diagnosis of STIs. A minor aspect of this could be explained by reductions in the number of sexual contacts and therefore actual reduced infections, but the greater aspect seems to be due to underdiagnosis. A dramatic surge of infections is expected in the next few years. It is of utmost importance to resume STI screening for early detection and treatment and thereby lowering the transmission of STIs. |
