Sumario:Messenger RNA (mRNA) shows great potential for medical applications, as recently demonstrated by the mRNA-based vaccines against the coronavirus. In addition, it has long been used for ectopic gene expression in cells and model organisms. While numerous methodologies are available for controlling gene expression at the level of transcription, approaches to control translation are scarce. Here we review strategies for direct light-mediated activation of mRNA translation via photocleavable groups and their potential to achieve spatial and temporal control of protein production.
