622por Collins, Sara, Dornburg, Alex, Flores, Joseph M., Dombrowski, Daniel S., Lewbart, Gregory A.“…This study establishes blood chemistry and hematological baseline parameters for the pinfish Lagodon rhomboides, a small marine teleost that is among the most dominant members of near-shore estuarine communities of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. Given their prominence, pinfishes are an ideal candidate species to use as a model for monitoring changes across a wide range of near-shore marine communities. …”

624por Kaplan, David A., Olabarrieta, Maitane, Frederick, Peter, Valle-Levinson, Arnoldo“…In this work, we investigated the effects of shore-parallel reefs on estuarine salinity using field data and hydrodynamic modeling in a degraded reef complex in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. Results suggested that freshwater detention by long linear chains of oyster reefs plays an important role in modulating salinities, not only in the oysters’ local environment, but over extensive estuarine areas (tens of square kilometers). …”

626por Ewing, Ruth Y., Mase-Guthrie, Blair, McFee, Wayne, Townsend, Forrest, Manire, Charles A., Walsh, Michael, Borkowski, Rose, Bossart, Gregory D., Schaefer, Adam M.“…We conducted a retrospective study of serum biochemistry and hematologic findings from displaced, out-of-habitat bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) exposed to various low salinity environments in waters along the southern United States including southeastern Atlantic and northern Gulf of Mexico. Serum sodium, chloride, and calculated osmolality were significantly lower and below reference ranges in displaced animals compared to free-ranging case control animals. …”

We found evidence for density‐dependent effects on foraging behavior during the breeding season, as individual foraging areas increased linearly with the number of breeding pairs per colony. …”

Although average barnacle density was nearly 4.5 times greater overall in the FGB than in the USVI, barnacle density decreased with depth in both reef regions. …”

We show that river-discharge and sea-level changes are significantly correlated ([Formula: see text]), such that sea level rises between 0.01 and 0.08 cm for a 1 [Formula: see text] annual river-discharge increase, depending on region. …”
