Here we demonstrate that the calretinin containing (CR+) neurons in the dorsal medial thalamus (DMT) constitute a key diencephalic node that mediates distinct levels of forebrain arousal. …”

12013por Oh, Jun Y., Petersen, Cathrine, Walsh, Christine M., Bittencourt, Jackson C., Neylan, Thomas C., Grinberg, Lea° T.“…According to the most conventional sleep model, wake-promoting neurons (WPNs) and sleep-promoting neurons (SPNs) compete for network dominance, creating a systematic “switch” that results in either the sleep or awake state. WPNs and SPNs are ubiquitous in the brainstem and diencephalon, areas that together contain less than 1% of the neurons in the human brain. …”

Our measurements in layers I-V show that the capillary red-blood-cell flux and oxygenation heterogeneity, and the intracapillary resistance to oxygen delivery, all decrease with depth, reaching a minimum around layer IV, while the depth-dependent oxygen extraction fraction is increased in layer IV, where oxygen demand is presumably the highest. …”
