description The analysis of the competitiveness of tomato production in the state of Oaxaca, Central Valley region, is important, as it is one of the first places in the production of the zone, the objective was to analyze the competitiveness, costs of production, and profitability of producers. In the analysis, the method of competitiveness indicator developed by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA, 2000) was used, the data were obtained by means of the application of surveys to tomato producers of Santiago Matatlán during the period from March to May 2020.The study zone registers the most significant production surface of the region, based on the information obtained the costs, income and profitability indicators were analyzed, it was found that 100 % of the surveyed producers earn more income than their costs. The competitiveness indicator price-cost was 2.06, so the results show that the tomato cultivation is competitive in relation to investments and the costs incurred in production.

El análisis de la competitividad de la producción de jitomate en el Estado de Oaxaca, región Valles Centrales, es importante, debido a que ocupa uno de los primeros lugares en la producción de la zona, el objetivo fue analizar la competitividad, los costos de producción, y la rentabilidad de los productores. En el análisis se empleó el método de indicadores de competitividad desarrollado por el Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura (IICA, 2000), los datos fueron obtenidos mediante la aplicación de encuestas a productores de jitomate de Santiago Matatlán en el periodo de marzo a mayo de 2020.La zona de estudio registra la superficie de producción más significativa de la región, con base en la información obtenida se analizaron los costos, ingresos e indicadores de rentabilidad, se encontró que el 100 % de los productores encuestados obtienen ingresos mayores que sus costos. El indicador de competitividad precio-costo fue de 2.06, por lo que los resultados demuestran que el cultivo de jitomate es competitivo en relación con la inversión y respecto a los costos en los que incurren en la producción.
