The objective of this study was to review the most relevant aspects of scientific research on the cultivation, nutritional properties and pharmacological potential of this seed. Diverse literary sources and databases that to date have been integrated on the cachichín, were identified. The cachichín is a plant species native from Mexico and belongs to the family Metteniusaceae. Most of the edible seed and wood are produced in the municipality of Misantla, Veracruz, Mexico. In average values, the composition of the seed is proteins 12.59 %, carbohydrates 41.61 %, lipids 39.25 %, fiber 4.25 % and ashes 2.30 %. Within its lipid profile, it contains unsaturated fatty acids beneficial to health in patients with cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. In future research, it is necessary to investigate aspects related to germination processes, suitable soils for cultivation, and nutritional needs, in addition to its use in new food formulations and its applications in a greater number of pharmacological approaches. In the current context of the consumption of functional foods in the daily diet, the cachichín takes an important role due to its nutritional and bioactive components within the approach of nutraceutical products or foods. |

El cachichín (Oecopetalum mexicanum Greenm. & C.H. Thomps.) es una especie arbórea que produce una semilla comestible a la que se han atribuido propiedades nutracéuticas importantes para mejorar la salud humana. El objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar los aspectos más relevantes de investigaciones científicas en torno al cultivo, las propiedades nutritivas y potencial farmacológico de esta semilla. Se identificaron diversa fuentes literarias y bases de datos que a la fecha se han integrado sobre el cachichín en México. Se encontró que el cachichín es una especie vegetal nativa de México perteneciente a la familia Metteniusaceae. En su mayoría, la producción del fruto comestible y de madera es realizada en el municipio de Misantla, en la región montañosa de la zona centro del estado de Veracruz, México. La composición del fruto o semilla está conformada por: proteínas 12.59%, carbohidratos 41.61%, lípidos 39.25 %, fibra cruda 4.25% y cenizas 2.30 %. Dentro de su perfil lipídico, contiene ácidos grasos insaturados benéficos para la salud en pacientes con enfermedades cardiovasculares como la diabetes. En futuras investigaciones es necesario indagar más aspectos relacionados con procesos de germinación de semillas, tipos de suelos más aptos para su cultivo, y necesidades nutrimentales, además de su empleo en nuevas formulaciones de botanas y sus aplicaciones en mayor número de enfoques farmacológicos. En el actual contexto del consumo de alimentos funcionales en la dieta diaria, el cachichín toma un rol importante debido a sus componentes nutritivos y bioactivos dentro del enfoque de productos o alimentos nutracéuticos.
