Sumario:The article discusses the genesis of archival photographic documents from the perspective of Photodocumentation, an area of cross-sectional studies based on the concept of the Information Cycle. It seeks to delimit the archival genesis of photographic documents as an approach applicable to photographic archives. It uses the case study methodology to analyze the research instrument Catalog of the Photographic Archive of Mário de Andrade, product of the organization of photographs, the series and its thematic subdivisions in conjunction with the theoretical field of Archival Science and Information Science. The specific objectives go through the conceptual delimitation of archival photographic document and Information Cycle, from the perspective of Photodocumentation. We conclude by verifying that the archival genesis, the initial phase of the informational cycle, involves the identification of the producer and that the information organization procedures must consider both the visual elements and the context of creation, as they affect the recovery and communication of information recorded in the archives.
